Complete Guide to Ukrainian Independence Day 2015

Independence Day is a national holiday and, in general, a big deal in Ukraine, especially now, in the middle of an invasion, when people are more patriotic than ever. If you’re new here and want to get to know Ukrainian culture, or if you just want to celebrate this Ukrainian holiday – here’s a complete guide to the most interesting events all over Ukraine!


Main celebrations, as always, take place in Kyiv.

Day of the National Flag, 23 August. The President will hoist the national flag on Sofiivska Ploscha at 9:00. State flags will be simultaneously hoisted in all cities in Ukraine, at military bases.

Independence March, 24 August. Unlike the last year, the military parade isn't planned. An Independence March is planned on Khreshatyk, in the center of which will be a soldier, the defender of Ukraine.

A memorial event is planned in the Park of Glory in Kyiv 24 August. At 12:00, a national minute of silence will be held in the memory of those killed in the anti-terrorist operation.

Vyshyvanka Parade, 23-24 August, Sofiivska Ploscha and Kontraktova Ploscha. Ukrainians paying respect to their traditional clothing – the embroidered shirt, Vyshyvanka. Main parade will be held 24 August, Kontraktova Ploscha at 12:00.

Flower Show “Flower Charm”, 21 August-30 September, Singing Field. This show is dedicated to Independence Day. Traditional Ukrainian flowers in art and customs will be featured.

Borsch Festival, 22-24 August, The National Complex “Expocenter of Ukraine”

Farmer’s Market “Apple-Honey Savior”, 19-24 August, 10:00-20:00, Spaso-Preobrajensky Sobor. At the charity market you can buy honey products, sweets, fruits, vegetables and pastry.

International Cuisine Festival Smachnofest vol. 3, 23-24 August 11:00-22:00

Beer & Burger Fest, 23-30 August at the Friendship of Nations Arch. Enjoy a craft beer and tasty burgers!

Ode to Joy at Maidan Nezalezhnosti, 24 August. International orchestra “I, Culture Orchestra” comes to Ukraine – the musicians will give a performance at Maidan Nezalezhnosti on Independence Day.



Etnovyr Folklore Festival, 20-24 August. Festival “Etnovyr” explodes with bright colors annually and is the main event of the celebrations of Ukraine Independence Day in Lviv. Colorful performances of foreign ensembles, spectacular march parades of participants through the central part of Lviv, national cuisine presentations, evenings of friendship, dance and sing workshops create special authentic and friendly atmosphere.

Vyshyvanka Festival in Odessa, 21-24 August, Primorsky boulevard and Potemkin stairs. The festival offers a folk artists market, master classes on traditional art, Ukrainian fashion shows, modern Ukrainian bands concert, poetic clubs and more!

Jazz Koktebel Festival, 23-30 August, Odessa oblast

Ancient Medzhybizh Renaissance Fair, 22-24 August, Medzhybizh village, Khmelnytska oblast. For its 10th anniversary, the Festival in 2015 will combine the medieval epoch with the 17th century, dedicating special space to the daily life of that period and the 17th-century battle for the Medzhybizh Fortress

Z-Games, 20-24 August, Odessa oblast, Zatoka. Action sports music festival with participation of world stars of sports, international competitions and master classes in Wake Boarding, Kite Boarding, Skimboarding, Z-climb, Slackline, Parkour, Mini ramp, Hip-Hop, Workout, Jet ski.
